Always My Love by S.H. Pratt (Review By Julie)

***Review By Julie From The Nerd Girl Page***

***I received this book from the author in exchange for a review.***

Always My Love by S.H. Pratt is a fairly standard romance. If half stars were allowed, I might have given this book 2.5 stars. While I enjoyed the premise and plot of the story, I found the characters to be underdeveloped and the pace to be a bit choppy. I was surprised that Liviann was never a suspect in her cheating boyfriend’s death in a house fire; that could have made for an interesting side story. Tristan her hunky new love interest doesn’t add much to the conversation beyond complimenting Liviann and trying to comfort her. I would have found their relationship and his character more interesting if he had more to say. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the twists in the plot. This is definitely a worthy beach-read. I look forward to reading Ms. Pratt’s next novel as this debut novel shows a lot of potential.

Liviann Walsh is the successful author of a YA book series and an avid gamer. She moves from Northern California to Olympia, Washington after a relationship ends. She turns to her… Continue reading

Alexandra Fry, Private Eye: The Curse of the Lion’s Heart by Angella Graff (Review By Pauline)

**Review By Pauline From The Nerd Girl Page*

*This book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.*
A very fun mystery. This one will keep you guessing until the end, but the author did a great job of leaving subtle clues along the way. The characters are memorable and easy to relate to, and the twisty plot is top notch.

Alexandra is an outcast, who struggles to belong somewhere, but she is certifiably special and believes she’ll never find someone who accepts her as she is. She is bullied, but remains strong and true to herself, which is all that matters. I believe this excellent middle grade novel will touch young readers and give them the wherewithal to just be themselves, too. Highly Recommended, 4.5 Stars.

Review – Dangerous Ally by Michelle Grey V””V

Melanie here aka VampireLovingDork  back  with my review of  Dangerous Ally by Michelle Grey which was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

I love a good mystery book and this one is certainly that. With the number I have read too often I can solve the crime fairly early on and then half the fun is removed but not in this case.

If I hadn’t been told that this was a debut offering I would never have believed it. The writing is well executed and the story compelling mixing a great balance of crime and romance.

Every time I thought I had figured out the plot we got a new piece of information that let me know I was wrong and the answers didn’t become clear until it was all wrapping up towards the climax.

My only complaint would be that for me, there was too much story after the crime part was over. I read it because it was there but felt that a short epilogue would have satisfied be far better.

A definite recommended read for mystery lovers everywhere!

Review – Double Star by Cindy Saunders V””V

Melanie here aka VampireLovingDork  back  with my review of  Double Star by Cindy Saunders which was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

Double Star is a beautiful YA adventure which takes a “not quite so typical” teenage girl and transports her to a whole new world where it quickly becomes apparent she has a destiny to fulfill.

As debut novel’s go this is definitely a good one. Well written and easy to identify characters (with bonus points for David Garrett references) that take on circumstances that would challenge many adults.

The book is a fairy easy read although definitely requires you to pay attention to certain details that pop back up as the story progresses. For that reason I think although the story is easily appropriate for younger teenagers I expect the story would appeal more to the older end of the teenage spectrum and I am certain many adults would definitely enjoy it.

Overall my biggest complaint is that as with so many books we will have to wait until the second installment for some of the answers I really would have liked to have had resolved before this book was complete.… Continue reading

Review – Of Shadow and Ash by Stacy Shofner Williams V””V

Melanie here aka VampireLovingDork  back  with my review of  “Of Shadow and Ash” by  Stacy Shofner Williams which was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

Of Shadow and Ash is a beautiful debut fantasy novel, that takes you on a journey through a whole new world with so many unexpected twists that for every question you get answered a plethora of new ones spring up to take their place.

The writing is fluid and the characters easy to identify with. The world you enter feels so real sometimes it is hard to step back and rejoin what is actually going on around you.

At one point I had to question if there was going to be a way to bring this book to a satisfying end because personally I would not have been able to do so, but once I read the ending I couldn’t remember why I had any doubts.

My only criticism would be that this is a book that requires your full attention. Which is not necessarily a bad thing but in a busy household sometimes it was difficult to give it the time that I felt it really needed.… Continue reading

Smoke, Wings and Stone by Marijon Braden (Review By Emily – YA Reviewer)

** Review By Emily from The Nerd Girl Page**

Emily here, the YA reviewer from Nerd Girl.  I give YA reviews from a real YA reader.  Here is  my review of  Smoke, Wings and Stone  which I was given in exchange for an honest review.

I know people say “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but that is exactly what I did. Right when I saw this cover, I hoped that I would absolutely love the book, and I was definitely right!

When I started reading the first paragraph I was mesmerized. It was funny and started off with a very incredible hook. From the very  first page it actually had me laughing out loud, and telling everyone in the house what happened.

This novel had everything most teenage girls want in a book! Lovable characters, amazing foreshadowing, a romantic plot and very handsome men. What made this book different from other monster type stories is the type of monsters that are presented. Some of the characters most people would be very familiar with but one of the main characters was something I really wasn’t expecting and that made it great.

Beyond the Bars by Brooke Williams (Review By Jaime R)

*Review By Jaime R. From The Nerd Girl Page*

**Book Provided By Author In Exchange For An Honest Review**

First of all I would like to extend my apologies for taking so long to read this. Personal life and prior promises and all. However, this 4 star book was great. A whole new whirlwind that I have not thought about a book going.

It definitely has a thrilling, horrible, heartbreaking, miracle having ride. Jonathan is a man, a father in prison who has connections to the outside world to make horrors happen…including his only brother Constantine. Who to me is a hero in this story. Bombs go off in 3 major cities threatening the lives of Jonathan’s brother, ex wife and daughter. One of them doesn’t survive…who you might have guessed already.

Then its off on a search and hunt to find one to reunite the family. The only family.

Def pick this one up. Its a pageturner Laughing
