When I started this book, I knew I was going to love it, just for the style of writing that Rachel Rawlings has. But as I read the first few chapters, I felt like I had read this before. After some research, I found out that I did when it first came out. That was just about a year ago. I already read the first 14 chapters by now and I wasn’t going to stop there. Yes, it’s that good. To remember it after all this time and many, many books in between, it says something about the author. A good author will leave an impression of their work in your brain. A good author will leave you wanting more. A good author has the skill to do this and more. Being said, Rachel Rawlings is a good author and more.
Love the beginning poem called Hell! It really says what and how, just about every living soul in this world feels and thinks. It is by J. H. Stevenson 1890 and very heavy words for even back then. If only Joaquin had read it before she decided to sell her soul to the devil. Thinking it would help at home and bring her and her Mother back together again. As they say, you better watch what you ask for. Yes the devil did as agreed upon, but at what extra cost to Jax?
Trying to get back as much as possible of her soul so she can get into heaven, Jax volunteers at a women’s shelter a few days a week and she is a bartender at night. Her little friend from down the street, Tommy, sometimes go to the shelter with her and helps her out. Jax has been kinda looking after Tommy for a few years now. He has become her friend and a little brother to her. Jax doesn’t let anybody into her life and heart, so Tommy is special. Wait till she finds out just how special Tommy really is.
This story all takes place in Baltimore MD and its suburbs. It has turned into a very rough area. Full of demons out to do no good to the people who live there. Jax has found that she can spot a demon very easy and has been fighting them off for a while now. To keep fit, she goes to a Boxing gym to work out and it helps to squelch the voices of the demons in her head. She has earned the respect of the guys who work out there and fight in the ring. One day a new face comes in and she is at a loss for words. He was gorgeous, hot body, sculptured face and more. She had an instant attraction to him and he to her. His name is Dane and he is a PI, looking for a missing women.
Well Jax seems to keep running into him and now has to ask why? They hit if off and take it from there very slowly, as Jax hasn’t been in a relationship for a while. Skipping ahead some, she finds out that Dane is a sin eater and she is really a Elioud, a child of Nephilim. Elioud are children of Angels and daughters of man. Because of this, Jax is put in the middle of good and evil. It’s fight for the good side or be thrown to the devil and believe me, he is waiting for her. Can she work with and for the angels? Can this help her into heaven? And what about Dan? They seem not to like him, but he is determined to stick by her side no matter what. He wants to fight with her and he wants to be with her in many ways.
The story gets better and better as you go along. Action, love, demons and angels make for a good read. I laughed, I cried towards the end and hanging on to the edge of your seat. Will Jax pay off her debt with the devil with her death? Or will she end up his queen and live as a demon slave? So much happens and loads of surprises. Even though I read this book before, I still couldn’t put it down for wanting more of the story. It was like reading it for the first time all over again, it’s that good!
