It’s 1879, and James, a time-wasting escapist, is trying to win a bet. His challenges include purchasing a lighthouse, hosting a séance, and spending the night with his father’s prize-winning stallion in a notoriously haunted attic. But the Carnival is in town for the All Hallows’ Eve celebrations, and the London fog has other ideas for James. Something vicious is waiting to pounce and lead him unwittingly towards a destiny he could never have imagined

***Katie- #NerdGirlKtLbLy’s Review***
This story is very fast paced. It did help me to write down characters names and little descriptions to help understand who everyone was, because there are a lot of characters and a lot of things going on at once. This is not a lighthearted book. It is whimsical, yet very dark, and at times creepy and scary. James is the main character and he starts the prologue by saying his life completely changed a year ago. He goes on to explain the events that transpired, which really puts you in an intrigued, confused, befuddled state, and you want to read on and see how it all culminated after this one night. James’s day started with him going to out to win a bet set by his friend Alex. He has six things he has to get/do all in a single day. While that’s going on, there is a carnival in town and many of the characters are people/creatures that James bypasses in the streets or in coffee shops. A lot of them have their own side adventures going on at the same time too. The carnival people are not all good, so some, like his friend Laura, are trying to protect him from the carnival people and their tricks, and some are going out and trying to feed and cause as much mischief as they can.
I really enjoyed this story. You already know that something big happened, but you’re not sure what, so the more you read and start to understand, the more the tension builds. You go on such a crazy adventure finding out what happened a year ago. Since there were so many characters, I found some were a little unnecessary. They literally came and went and didn’t seem to really add anything important so I thought some could have been taken out. I loved the magic in this creepy world though. It was just an all-around thrill ride. If you’re looking for a happy ending, you probably won’t find it here, but if you are looking for something dark and interesting this is definitely something worth checking out.
