Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to the reality. It’s more than just a game or a performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find to magic in this world . . .
Welcome, welcome to Caraval—Stephanie Garber’s sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.
Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.
Magic. In technical terms, it is the art of producing illusions as entertainment by the use of sleight of hand and deceptive devices, often with legendary means. Magic to the participants of Caraval is mystical and beautiful, yet dangerous. It was… It is a dreamers wonderland. One that they will do whatever it takes for just a wish. A wish granted to a winner but one time a year.
Scarlett dreamed of Caraval ever since she was a child listening to the tales of her grandmother. The wish to be her means to end the horrible life she endured with her over protective and brutal father. Finally, an engagement arranged by her father and Caraval was a flicker in her mind. The fire that burned inside her since she was a child was gone regardless of all the letters she has written.
One week before her wedding, a beautiful letter of thick parchment and enchanting wording landed on her “lap.” It dared her to throw aside her engagement arranged by her ruthless father and go to the one place her sister Tella and her dreamt of for such a long time. Two tickets. One Week. A Dream.
After an elaborate rouse to deceive their father, they two sisters went to the island separately. Scarlett was stuck with a pirate heathen she barely trusted until she meets her sister; she weaved her way through the magical enchantments of the island. Only later finding the quest for this year’s Legendary Caraval was to find her sister on the island.
Stephanie Garber created the world of magic and mysticism so beautiful and tangible that I felt every single world tickle my soul. I could see every fancy movement, every magical dress change, and felt ever painful moment Scarlett went through. Such beauty and magic should not be wasted. Please make sure that Caraval is on your TBR list for 2017.
