Winter is the most deadly season in Temperance. And it’s not just because of the fierce cold. Evil is stalking the backcountry of Yellowstone, killing wolves and leaving only their skins behind.

As the snow deepens, Geologist Petra Dee is staring her own death in the face, while former Hanged Man Gabriel struggles with his abrupt transition back to mortality. The ravens and the rest of the Hanged Men are gone, and there are no magical solutions to Petra’s illness or Gabriel’s longing for what he’s lost…and what he stands to lose now.

Meanwhile, there’s a new sheriff in town. Sheriff Owen Rutherford has inherited the Rutherford ranch and the remnants of the Alchemical Tree of Life. He’s also a dangerously haunted man, and his investigation of Sal’s death is leading him right to Gabriel.

It’s up to Petra, her coyote sidekick Sig, and Gabriel to get ahead of both Owen and the unnatural being stalking them all – before the trail turns deathly cold.

***Melanie – #NerdGirlVamp’s  Review***
Hmmmmm this is a difficult book for me to review. I generally read books blind, as in other than what the author / publisher sends me I don’t look the books up online first. This is one of those cases where I wish I had as despite the publisher printing that this is the “starting point for a great new series” as I was reading I felt I was missing some pieces of information. Sometimes this happens in Fantasy books and so I figured maybe it was just a slight disconnect from me, but now I see that this is listed as book 3 in a series!

That makes far more sense! I think if I had read the other 2 first then this would probably be getting 5 stars from me. The writing is strong, the story is dark, and the premise kept me turning the pages. As I stated though there were just these moments scattered through where I felt I was missing something, and I am pretty sure that would be there had I read the previous installments.

For dark fantasy readers I would definitely recommend Laura Bickle’s writing. This was the first book I had read by her but it will not be the last

4 Stars from me.

Thank you for your review and good to know it’s book 3 as I hate starting in the middle and feeling lost
