And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.

Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, who’s expected to rule a nation, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.

But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.

From New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White comes the first book in a dark, sweeping new series in which heads will roll, bodies will be impaled . . . and hearts will be broken.

***Gladys – #NerdGirlOfficial’s  Review***
Where shall I begin…  I found nothing wrong with this book except for the slow build in the beginning.  BUT if you push through you will totally understand the need for character build up.  Without it, there would be no way of knowing how beautifully disastrous young Lada is and will be growing up.
From the beginning you will learn that she has utter disdain with the idea of her being the ugly duckling girl and her younger brother, Radu, being the delicate handsome flower that he was. Their souls belonged in each other’s bodies.  Like a sick reversal in roles.
I applaud the slow buildup.  It means that after their growth pains the epic story unfolds before you.  I Darken is loosely based on the events in Transylvania at the height of the Ottoman Empire in Europe.  The backdrop exquisite in its tragic beauty speaks volumes in itself.  AND Lada’s vicious demeanor holds no pretense in what type of heroine she is.  She is a man in women’s skin.  Not a skinwalker, just a girl born to a heightened sense of self and a strong desire for her father’s approval.
Lada’s father is none other than Vlad Dracul, and she wants nothing more than to squash her foes and reclaim Wallachia from the Ottoman Empire.  How does she do it?  Viciously and with a fervent desire of eliminating everything in her path.  She is no wallflower or tragically beautiful princess.  SHE IS LADA!!
Oh did I forget to mention Mehman? The boy who wants nothing more than to be friends with Radu and Lada after they were dropped off by their father to the Ottomans.  Well, it sets off to be interesting in it’s own way.  Woven in between were facts and names, but you will find that Lada’s continued formidable presence to take over once again.
Kiersten White does not merely weave a tale of fantasy; she paints it in the most vibrant colors she can conjure.  This book is beautiful in detail and in glory.  Thumbs up for this epic fantasy!!
Four stars for this first in series novel and a tip of the Nerd Girl hat!!
