I am surrounded on all sides by a desert. A guest, in a prison of sand and sun. My family is here. And I do not know whom I can trust.
In a land on the brink of war, Shahrzad has been torn from the love of her husband Khalid, the Caliph of Khorasan. She once believed him a monster, but his secrets revealed a man tormented by guilt and a powerful curse—one that might keep them apart forever. Reunited with her family, who have taken refuge with enemies of Khalid, and Tariq, her childhood sweetheart, she should be happy. But Tariq now commands forces set on destroying Khalid’s empire. Shahrzad is almost a prisoner caught between loyalties to people she loves. But she refuses to be a pawn and devises a plan.
While her father, Jahandar, continues to play with magical forces he doesn’t yet understand, Shahrzad tries to uncover powers that may lie dormant within her. With the help of a tattered old carpet and a tempestuous but sage young man, Shahrzad will attempt to break the curse and reunite with her one true love.
Like the grains of sand in a dessert, Renee Ahdieh’s words fashions a majestically beautiful landscape of sensory imagery and provoke emotions that this young-at-heart reader longs to feel. I didn’t think she could top or even come close to the beauty she trapped in the pages of The Wrath and the Dawn, but she did tenfold.
The Rose and The Dagger met my expectations from the very beginning and accelerated to the finish line in a sweep of utter brilliance.
The tale begins right where we left off. Khalid, the monster killer of wives, morning the destruction of his beloved city, Korhasan, at the hands of a dark curse. His wife and love were taken away by her childhood love, Tariq.
Shahrzad was enveloped in a prison of sand and enemies. Their love forbidden, their allies turn to foes, and the lovers separated by a sea of sand. Where to turn? The mind is an incredible thing. BUT so is the heart. Shazi draws a line in the sand, steps over it with the cunning and grace of a serpent out for blood. She is determined to retrieve all that her enemies took from her.
This epic conclusion will surprise you, tantalize you and bring you to tears. New characters introduced, old ones expanded upon and you ultimately fall in love with some and despise the others. The secondary love story within takes you to new levels of anticipation. ONLY to be left broken and your heart ripped apart once again. (In a good way of course)
5 stars, a tip of my Nerd Girl hat and a sincere thank you for such never ending beauty!
