Taisie MacDonnell is a quiet girl who loves knitting and Celtic music. When a traditional Irish group moves to her small town of Antrim, Maine, she’s thrilled. And that the handsome pipe player she met at a fair is one of the band members makes it all the more exciting.

Conn McLaren and his siblings that make up the band, The Black Swans, are wanderers, moving from place to place. They have a secret that they must hide, a curse they have been under for many years, placed on them by the Fae at the behest of their step-mother, Aoife.

Taisie has no idea that becoming involved with Conn, the handsome pipe player, will enmesh her in magic, a centuries-old enchantment and pursuit by the Fae.

This book is a modern retelling of the old Irish story “The Children of Lir”.

***Jaime, #NerdGirlJay Review***

The Black Swans is a retelling of an old Irish story, The Children of Lir. Legend has it that there once was a king who loved his wife very much. At her passing, all he had left were his children, whom he doted on. After remarrying, his new wife became so jealous of his affection for them that she had the fairy queen Maebe curse them. Swans by day, human at night.

Taisie is just a normal woman, living in Antrim Maine. She loves to knit and works at a knitting store. Every year she attends the fair and while there she hears a band that plays Celtic music, The Black Swans She’s attracted to one of the players, Finn. They spend time together and learn that Finn and his brothers and sister are booked to play regularly at a pub in Antrim.

Taisie is falling hard for Finn, but she can feel he is holding something back. She could never have imagined that the truth is far stranger than she could have ever thought. Down by the lake one day, she comes across four black swans, she accidentally stumbles across Finn’s secret. Deciding her love for Finn is real, she wants to break the curse. However, Queen Maebe has called them back to the fairy court to play music at her whim. Will Maisie ever see Finn again?

This was a great read. I love the modern day telling of the tale. Traveling between worlds, the curse. All the characters were very well developed and I enjoyed the intermingling of the two worlds. If you are a fan of sweet, paranormal romance, this is a definite must read!
