After suffering a tragic accident as a child, Maggie Wilson has tried her whole life to regain the happiness she lost. She has been in survival mode ever since, dealing with a mentally unstable parent, having no one to turn to for help. Her desire to escape to a better future fuels her motivation and keeps her focused on what really matters, breaking free of the hell she lives in.

Things at home are complicated and it’s easier to push people away than allow them to get too close. She doesn’t let anyone into her life except her best friend Amanda. Maggie has perfected keeping secrets, maintaining her GPA and staying out of relationships. All her energy is put into her school work so that when she graduates she can leave for college and forget her past.

All of that changes when she meets Vincent Moreno. His reputation precedes him but she quickly discovers there is so much more to him than what you see on the surface. He manages to wiggle his way into her life despite her efforts to keep him at a distance. As Maggie starts to open up she realizes how much she needs someone like Vince in her life. They form a connection like no other and it has her reconsidering everything.

***Stephenee, #NerdGirlSteph Review***
Author Charlene Zapata takes everything that I think I have ever known about heartbreak, abuse and loss and throws it all out the window with this phenomonal book! I was hooked from the first page and couldn’t/wouldn’t stop reading it for anything. I felt like I was bound to my kindle and that I owed it to Maggie to see what happened next.  The characters are that complex and the storyline is that good that it took everything I had in me to stop reading this book to function during my normal day.

Maggie is a teenager that has lived her first 17 years knowing only hate after she lost her father at the age of 6.  She lives with her mother who is abusive both physically and emotionally and Maggie just won’t leave her. She is wise beyond her years and is someone that anyone would admire for her loyalty.  Vincent is the bad boy, the high school drop-out, the boy that your mother warns you about….or is he?  The author did an amazing job with the development of the characters in this story and she had the reader relating to the characters on so many levels.

The plot is unique, yet familiar as the reader delves into the lives of Maggie and Vincent and no matter what direction the author takes the reader is always one step behind in figuring it out.  There are more than a few twists and turns throughout this story.  The author is able to keep the readers guessing while leaving them an emotional mess.  You will run through the entire gamut of emotions as you read this book.  Anger & disbelief will become a constant battle.  You will yell, scream, cry and blubber your way through some of the chapters but you will enjoy every moment of it.  Make sure you stock up on tissues as you may need them more than once.

This is a must read for anyone and everyone!  The author takes you on an amazing journey that you don’t want to end! I have to one-click book 2 soon so that I can see what happens next!  Enjoy this one and don’t wait too long before you get it! It is an amazing, yet hard journey!
