His old life was crazy. Her old life died. Can they hope to build one together that will last? Full length novel! First in the Love Under Construction Series. Tony is a successful businessman whose personal life has been almost unbearable thanks to his crazy ex-wife. Nikki lost her husband and children in a tragic accident and barely has a life. It looks like there’s a “happily ever after” on the horizon – until an ecoterrorism group with a personal bone to pick threatens everything.
First full-length installment in the Love Under Construction Series following the introductory volume, The Groundbreaking. Tony Walters operates a successful construction company in Louisville, Kentucky; he’s anything but successful in his personal life, thanks to a mean-spirited, mentally ill ex-wife. Nikki Wilkes has lived for five years with almost no life, thanks to a drunken driver’s mistake that took her husband and children from her. It seems the universe has aligned to make sure they meet, and their shy and sweet attempts to build a relationship blossom just as an ecoterrorism group begins to threaten the construction business. But as time goes by, it becomes clear that the threat is directed personally at Tony, and as the group’s efforts escalate, it looks like answered prayers for a special someone in their lives might morph into not having a prayer for a “happily ever after.” Through it all, family and friends stand by them and add to the madness, mayhem, and hilarity, while the bedroom smokes with enough scorching, crazy, adventurous sex to set everything on fire. The main characters are all over the age of thirty-five, and most are well over forty. A fun, mature, erotic romp with enough danger to leave the reader hanging. Not a stand-alone; the four novels are designed to be read in order for greatest enjoyment. It’ll make you say, “I didn’t see that coming!” more than once and leave you smiling!
I wasn’t sure what to expect after reading this book, but I’m glad that I picked it up. While it is an erotic romance, it also has another element to it as well, that of mystery and suspense. You have your main characters, Tony and Nikki, who are much older than the normal twenty-five to thirty year old couples I normally read about. This couple is in their fifties, and before you say ew gross, hear me out. Tony is a very successful businessman but he’s also a man who prides himself on his appearance. He’s in a construction business after all and who doesn’t need to be in shape for that? But seriously, he works out and takes care of himself so he’s got the body of a younger guy. As for Nikki, well if you’ve had kids you know you have that little pouch that just does not go away. She’s got one but she’s also well toned and takes care of herself. She goes to the gym, the same one as Tony, and she eats very healthy so she’s very attractive. It’s not like we’ve got two grandparents who let themselves go and are having wild sex. No you’ve got some very attractive older people trying to start over who just happen to be interested in BDSM. Trust me, they’re very well written characters.
I adored Nikki. She struggled a lot after loosing her family but after she gives Tony a chance, she discovers that she’s incredibly strong and worth loving. I didn’t think she could grow considering her age but she does and she does it well. Tony is well-rounded and despite his wealth, is a very simple guy: he just wants to make a woman happy. His bitter ex-wife tore down his self-esteem so he has zilch when Nikki comes along. It takes him forever to ask her out. But once he lets Nikki in, Tony sees himself change into a better man.
Now I mentioned mystery and suspense and I bet you’re wondering why. Am I right? Well while Nikki and Tony are trying to figure out how to start over over fifty, there is a group of people targeting Tony and his business. Trucks are vandalized. Job sites are destroyed and then there are attempts on several people’s lives. You seriously will not be prepared for who’s behind it and why. I was shocked and I loved it. Add to that Tony’s ex-wife is murdered and Tony is the prime suspect. The evidence is overwhelming. But did he do it? Or is someone else responsible?
So why only four stars? Well in all honesty it’s because there was some dialogue that drove me crazy. In parts of the book when Nikki and Tony would talk, they sounded like teenagers or young adults. Maybe it was how it sounded in my head but it just drove me batty. I wanted to just smack them and say “You’re not twenty-five, please start sounding like a grown up.” In other places, they would talk exactly like older people should and act that way. It just didn’t jive for me. Maybe it’ll jive for you and that’s cool.
This is the first in a four part series, however, if you’re not a cliffhanger fan, you’re in luck. No cliffhanger but you do get
