Kasper writes the Hunters of Reloria tales: of halflings bonded to tiny fairies and of badass dragons who may decide to be good guys if they’re in the right mood and not fancying a halfling for lunch.
She enjoys creating fantastic worlds and has a growing fan base who like to send in artwork of the characters, which you can see on her webpage.
I totally enjoyed reading this installment of the Indy Author talk with Karen and I hope you do too!!!

You may be under the impression that fantasy authors lead totally wild and energetic lives. Well, I’m here to confess that although some days we do like to dress up as elves or Jedi and hang out at comic book conventions, sometimes we just like a quiet day down the beach with the halflings (kiddies) or going for a walk in the woods. Some of us are fairly quiet and introverted types, not unlike a skittish unicorn or rare water sprite.
Today my dream of becoming the owner of a baby dragon unfortunately was left unfulfilled, but I was delighted to receive a totally awesome exercise bike which I can ride whilst watching all my favourite fantasy movies and the Big Bang Theory (yep, I’m a nerd, through and through, and proud of it). I also received a large box of colourful dragon eggs, otherwise known as marble truffles, which look totes amazing. Yummo.
My children finish up school today for the year, so we dropped into school briefly to gift the wonderful teachers with home decorated pinecones and coloured-in Christmas cards done by my little cuties. School teachers are such a big part of our lives and we have been blessed to have such a professional and dedicated bunch of them at our local school.
Now we’re off to make some rumballs (with the local favourite Bundy Rum) and White Christmas with cherries and smarties for Christmas gifts. Christmas cooking is da bombe and it’s great to have a stash for all the neighbours and visitors likely to pop in over the next 2 weeks.
Then we will have a swim in the pool with maybe a spot of volleyball or water pistol wars.
Now that I have dispelled all your fantasies of me doing Cosplay or Avatar-like party games, I’ll just be heading off on my broomstick (AKA exercise bike) and zooming in for Harry Potter with the halflings. Have a great day everyone, cheers, Kasper.
Kasper J. Beaumont was born and raised in Australia and lives a quiet life with the family in a seaside town. Combining a love of fantasy and a penchant for travel in the Hunters of Reloria trilogy, Kasper started to write on the urging of friends and family and enjoys watching readers become immersed in the magical world of Reloria. Kasper is a pen name for a rather shy author who is happy to remain unnamed.
The Hunters of Reloria trilogy is about the magical world of Reloria where halflings and fairies share a bond. Dwarves, elves, knights and dragons inhabit this country, but their world is about to be invaded by scaly lizardmen and giant Cyclops.
Book 1: Elven Jewel was published as an ebook and paperback in 2013.
Book 2: Hunters’ Quest ebook 2013 and paperback in 2014
Book 3: Dragon’s Revenge is the thrilling conclusion, ebook July and paperback November 2014.
Q. When and why did you begin writing? What inspired you to write your first book?
I would give the credit for my primary school writing to the encouragement given to me by my teacher for 2 years, Mrs Ventura, who encouraged me in my poetry and creative writing classes. My life took a different direction after school with a focus on University nursing studies, followed by a gap year of backpacking around Europe, which seems a common rite of passage among us Aussies. I finally came back to writing after my third child was born and I rediscovered my creative passion.
Q. What book(s) / author(s) have influenced your life and writing?
David Eddings is probably my favourite fantasy author and I revisit the Belgariad and Mallorean series regularly. I enjoy Tolkien, Rowling and a myriad of paranormal, fantasy and sci-fi authors too. I also love adventure stories and have quite a collection of Clive Cussler tomes.
Q. Tell us about your characters and how they came to be? Have they been in your head for a long time?
My first idea was of halflings and their bond fairies playing together in a field when lizardmen invaded their farmlands. Halfling friends Randir and Fendi are playful and sometimes naughty boys who are about to grow into men as war comes to their lands and they must unite the elves, dwarves and men against evil. I don’t know that there is a lot of plotting and planning before I write, it is more an organic process that develops as we go along. This can sometimes mean rewriting entire passages when the characters have a change of heart.
Q. What motivates you to write?
The characters tell me what they want to do and often my imaginings are as clear to me as watching the action play out in real life. Also, now I have a loyal group of fans called the Relorian Alliance who encourage me.
Q. What is the hardest part of writing?
Finding the time. Between shiftwork, three young children and volunteering commitments, I find time is a precious commodity. I have joined a local writing group to motivate me to write regularly.
Q. Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
Haha, I learnt that writing is not as easy as I thought it was. The writing itself was easy, but the revising and editing takes much time and effort to polish the story.
Q. Where do you get your ideas?
Out of thin air mostly, that and some of the quirky things my children say or do. They are a great source of comedic inspiration.
Q. What does your family think of your writing?
They are big fans and like to wear their Hunters of Reloria fan club shirts with pride.
Q. What is the best advice you would give to inspiring authors?
1. Start writing
2. Find a good editor
3. There will be good days and bad days, but your heart will show you the way.
Q. What book(s) are you reading now?
Bloodpledge by Tima Maria Jacoba.
It’s a vampire novel set in Sydney harbour.
