It’s Beck O’Loughlin’s job to keep people safe, but what he never bargained for was having to keep his former high school sweetheart and love of his life, Kelsey Walters, safe after walking away from her ten years ago.
Beck, now a hardened Boston detective and Kelsey, an inn owner in their small touristy town of Rockport, Massachusetts, find themselves struggling with the harsh reality that Kelsey’s life may be in serious danger.
Stalked and tormented by an ex-boyfriend, she begins to realize his threats are very much real. All she wants is to feel normal again and that’s when Beck shows up, bound and determined to save her.
But protecting Kelsey isn’t the only thing on Beck’s mind when their sexual tension steams hotter than a New England summer. Being this close begins to test both of their resolve, as emotions run high and all the feelings from the past begin to resurface.
Will they be able to grab onto this second chance at love, or will outside dangers threaten their chance at happiness?
Coming Home to You by Claire Raye is the author’s debut novel. It is a superb first outing.
This second-chance-at-love romance is also a fast-paced thriller. Much more than the romance story line, the suspenseful tracking of the stalker had me riveted to my chair turning pages. The tension builds nicely as the story reaches its crescendo. There are plot points that had me biting my nails and wanting to warn the characters. Some new authors build and build but then have an anticlimactic culmination or an abrupt resolution because they haven’t mastered story telling yet. This is not the case with Coming Home to You.
While the thriller/suspense aspect of the story hooked me, I also found the love story entertaining. I love the idea of childhood sweethearts reunited, and the author did a good job of showing the reader why the characters initially split up from each character’s POV. I felt that the love story relied heavily on sex as a way to communicate the main characters renewed interest in one another. While I think there were more sex scenes than necessary, the scenes were not used as a substitute for main plots points. If the sex scenes were removed, Ms. Raye would still have an excellent, strong storyline which is important to me (and cannot be said of every adult romance novel).
The cast of characters are interesting, and all are fully developed. The female characters, Kelsey and Erin, are sassy and strong. I love that she doesn’t become a simpering wimp when fighting off her stalker; she essentially tells herself to buck up because she isn’t living a fairytale and there will not be a knight in shining armor coming to rescue her. Beckham (Beck) and Ryan are tough-as-nails detectives in Boston, and while they have more tricks up their sleeves than small-town sheriff, Finn, it takes their combined talents to find the stalker. Jason, the stalking antagonist is deviously creepy! That character would make any single woman think twice about dating someone new.
The one aspect of the book that I didn’t care for was the excessive swearing. Using some swearing to convey a strong feeling or as a way to depict a character is understandable, but I found the quantity of swearing detracted from the story. Ms. Raye’s writing is solid and she doesn’t need to rely on that gimmick.
Overall, Coming Home to You is well-written book that I would recommend. I’m looking forward to the next book in Claire Raye’s Rockport Beach series.
