After the Affair of the Clockwork Scarab, Evaline Stoker and Mina Holmes are eager to help Princess Alix with a new case. Seventeen-year-old Willa Aston is obsessed with spiritual mediums, convinced she is speaking with her mother from beyond the grave. What seems like a case of spiritualist fraud quickly devolves into something far more menacing: someone is trying to make Willa “appear lunatic,” using an innocent-looking spiritglass to control her. The list of clues piles up: an unexpected murder, a gang of pickpockets, and the return of vampires to London. But are these events connected? As Uncle Sherlock would say, “there are no coincidences.” It will take all of Mina’s wit and Evaline’s muscle to keep London’s sinister underground at bay.

***Melanie – #NerdGirlVamp’s  Review***
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this from the publisher and all I can say is all my steampunk loving friends better get reading the first one (if they haven’t already) so that they are ready for when this gets released in October.

I am absolutely adoring this duo and although it is meant for a more YA genre it is certainly one of those novels that has an easily accesible crossover.

This second installment has more of the supernatural element tied in than book one but without sacrificing the Holmes need for proof before conclusions. The girls are growing and personality traits are exchanging just as with any friendship between young ladies in this age bracket.

I love that the Gardella legacy is more explored this time as whilst there were a few subtle references in book 1 and they were an lovely surprise, in this book they have been raised up which for me (having read them was like being in on a secret) and for those that haven’t I think it would inspire me to want to go and find them.

Well written, fun, and a clever mix of new story with historical and contemporary references that just kept the pages turning.

I cannot wait for the next installment!

An easy 5 out of 5 stars from me! V””V
