Synopsis

The future is bleak in the year 2102. The planet is in chaos and the weather patterns have completely shifted, turning most of the world into an uninhabited wasteland.

The rich and powerful of North America have pulled back into the six remaining megacities, erasing all trace of a central government and leaving millions displaced by the environmental crisis to fend for themselves in the dying world.

Sixteen-year-old Maya has a gift, a power she thinks can heal the earth and make it habitable again. A gift that she must learn to harness. The school for the gifted in Neo York is the only place where she can learn to control her power and reach her potential.

Yet the school is not what it seems. Ran by the ruthless head of the city of Neo York, the school’s only objective is to extract the powers of the gifted and then discard them. Only Ty, heir to the city, can keep Maya from being destroyed there. But Ty has a secret, and his loyalty to his family has never wavered.

Will his growing love for Maya be strong enough to save them both?

***Misty – #NerdGirlShadow’s Review***
Imagine a world where the environmental problems we are concerned with today have now wreaked havoc on everyday life, turning life as we know it upside down. This book begins by inviting the reader to take a peek into this dystopian future. It is disheartening, to say the least. The author paints quite a distressing picture of our fight for survival, allowing strong characters to reveal a glimmer of hope.
The misery and hardships that exists are so real, your heart aches for the characters. The Grower’s Gift is brought to life with a solid story line and substantial detail, forcing you to read further. The despair that exists in a world where natural resources have diminished and everyone, except the rich, of course, are struggling to survive. The reader is handed its heroine when the main character, Maya, ventures to develop her gift.
Maya is brave, bold and charming, extremely intelligent and very feisty. In an attempt to save the world, she leaves her home to attend a school in Neo York, where the rich and privileged live and want for nothing. This special school focuses on developing her gift, which is to bring life to that which is dying. The school doesn’t meet her expectations. But, Maya fights to hone her skills as the planet deteriorates around her.
As the relationship between Ty, the heir to Neo York, and Maya develops, you are pulled into a battle between backgrounds, cultures, and basic outlooks on life. Maya’s feisty attitude keeps him on his toes and gives him a different view of the world. With the hope of intriguing new love, the characters play perfectly off one another, making for an intense relationship.
The author is able to weave an intricate tapestry of hope, love, fear, romance and chaos, with twists and turns that will keep your eyes glued to the pages.
The Grower’s Gift basically sets the background for what I expect to be an exciting series. It ends on a promising note, which I am not always a fan of, but worked well here because it still kept me asking for more. I think it’s a great start to what I hope to be an exciting series. The second book is set to be released this summer!

Any important information regarding posting review (Post with spotlight, Indy author talk, etc.): Vanna Smythe is the author of the Anniversary of the Veil fantasy trilogy and The Grower’s Gift, the first book in a new YA dystopian series. She has been writing creatively since her early teens, though one could say her creative writing efforts started long before that. While still in kindergarten, she once tore up a library book to make alphabet soup, and has been fascinated with what words can do, the pictures and worlds they can create, ever since.

Vanna is currently working on a new YA dystopian series called Progeny of Time, which was inspired by the bleak future presented in The Hunger Games, the fight between good and evil played out in Harry Potter, and the TV show Heroes, but with a totally unique story and twist. And don’t worry, the story will be equally fun for teens as well as adults. The second book in the series will be released in Summer 2014.
