All the other girls had a normal childhood, full of Girl Scouts and sleepovers, but Charlie Evans wasn’t so lucky. Her life had been spent in and out the Cardiac Care Unit and moving across the country with her military father.

So when Charlie finds out she’s moving back to her home town, she hopes things will finally be different. She has learned the hard way not to let anyone in. People always let her down, and it wasn’t easy to trust anyone new. That was until Sam Greyson walks into her life and threatens to knock down every wall she’d ever built to protect herself.

With Sam in the picture, Charlie decides to take one last shot and open herself up. With Sam’s help, she is finally able to let someone see the real, bruised and damaged girl inside. That is until she is forced to make a decision between her own happiness and ruining Sam’s life to be with him. If giving him up meant he could have a normal life…She would do it, in a broken heartbeat.

***Contains Strong Language and Mature Situations. Not for young readers***

Wow! When I first picked up this book to review, I thought it would be a good read…and I’m happy to say that it exceeded my expectations! It was incredibly realistic and something that I feel many people will be able to relate to. This book also touches on very real and serious medical problems that the main character goes through, so be prepared now to need some tissues because you will cry.

Meet Charlotte, or Charlie for short. She may look like your typical nineteen year old high school senior and military brat, but take another look at her. You’ll see that she’s built up years of walls around her heart and soul; she only trusts a handful of people because she’s been hurt in the past. Charlie also keeps people intentionally at a distance because she has serious heart problems. You’ll read about them in the book, and Vanessa Marie goes into a lot of detail regarding the problems so you’ll feel like you’re there in the hospital with Charlie. I loved Charlie. She’s got a lot of love in her heart but she doesn’t know quite how to lay it out. She’s snarky and witty. Charlie is supportive of her two best friends, Jules and Sarah, but has trouble accepting their support as well as the support of others. It’s something you’ll see her struggle with. I believe that many people in Charlie’s shoes will relate to her and understand what she’s going through.

Now, let’s meet Sam. Sam is a man that Charlie meets by accident at a coffee shop and after a rather awkward beginning, the two form a friendship that obviously leads to a deeper relationship. Sam listens to her. He doesn’t understand all of what she deals with but he wants to. Sam is the first person that Charlie lets in and shows her scars to. He makes her feel safe, beautiful and special. Their relationship is tested at a point in the book that I would really love to tell you about, but it would give too much away and I’d rather you read the book to find out the really awesome plot twist. Sam is genuinely a great guy; he’s someone that has compassion, love and understanding that Charlie needs.

While this is the first book in the series, Vanessa does not give us a cliffhanger (thank you!). I can’t wait to get my hands on book two because I want to know what happens to the other characters in this book!
