A cold draft made the dress tremble around my ankles and chilled my hands. I walked into the other room, convinced that I hadn’t left the window open. Now it was, and a man stood near it. With the lights off, shadows kept his face hidden, but I recognized him anyway, thanks to the dark, wavy hair, reminiscence of a romantic hero, and the square shoulders. He was still wearing his evening suit. Radu Basarab, descendent of King Mircea the Elder turned vampire fighter extraordinaire, honored me with his presence.

“What are you doing here?” I whispered, afraid to hear my own words.

Radu’s low voice floated along with the breeze, without him fully turning to face me. “You have an infestation.”

I ached to tell him he had no right to scold me for it. He’d left, knowing damn well Ştefan was more interested in politics, and Rodica hardly ever got her nose out of the books. It wasn’t fair to dump it all on me. Why didn’t he go and talk to the other members of the Little Council? Because they weren’t the ones hiding Max.

“I know,” I said instead of anything else.

Radu tilted his head and watched me for a long moment in silence. With the light coming in through the window, he could see me quite well. “I was in Bulgaria, helping clean Sofia’s streets of a couple of vampire clans, when I heard the rumor that one of them made it here, by official invitation no less.”

He didn’t ask if it was true. He’d seen Max at the ball; he knew it was.

His stern look meant ‘what do you have to say for yourself?’, and I felt the need to explain. “The President invited him. The whole matter is top secret—”

“I don’t care why Stănescu invited him. He shouldn’t be here,” Radu said, and it sounded like signing Max’s death sentence. “If you can’t handle it, I will. I just wanted to let you know.” Meaning ‘if you don’t put him on a plane and fly him out of here, you’ll have a dead vampire by dinnertime.’

He turned towards the window, ready to leave, and no matter what I’d say or do, I couldn’t stop him.

“Wait. Does … does Rodica know you’re here?” I asked.

“No. But she will.” A ray of light glided over his face, and the grin I saw there, with pointed teeth biting into his bottom lip, terrified me to no end.

He jumped out, and I stood there, wailing inside. The rumors about one of our pandurs switching sides turned out to be true. We had lost Radu for real this time. He could never return now.

“Who was that?” Jesse panted in the doorway.

“A ghost,” I murmured.
