***THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***
When I wake up in a dark, unfamiliar room, I have no idea what’s waiting for me in the shadows. My imagination conjures up demons of the worst kind.
Reality is much worse:
A collar with no leash. A prison with no walls. And a life stripped of meaning.
I am presented with a vile contract and asked to sign. It outlines the terms of my servitude. The only information I have about my captor are the two small letters inked at the bottom:
Armed with only my memories, I must do everything I can to avoid becoming ensnared in his twisted mind games. But in the end, it all comes down to one choice:
Resist and die.
***Contains Sex, Strong Language and Adult Situations. Not for young readers***
While this installment doesn’t have any sex in the book, it speaks of sex slaves and very dark themes.
I started this book with the knowledge that it was just over 100 pages so I knew that I wasn’t going to get the whole story, but I wasn’t sure how much of it I was going to get. The story switches back and forth between the present and past, with the beginning containing bits and pieces of the future. It is all told from Lilly’s pov and from what she remembers as she wakes up throughout the story.
The book read much like a psychological thriller, as the author introduces us to Lilly Ryder who finds herself in an inescapable predicament. The novella begins to allow the reader to start to understand why Lilly is so strong, independent and driven, however, there is much secrecy surrounding her captor, “J.S.”. The novella kept me turning pages, wanting to learn more about his perverse (were they really?) motives and more about the man himself. You really don’t know anything about J.S. yet, just what bits and pieces Lily remembers.
I wish there was a little more action to this book because nothing really happened. It was just a snippet of Lilly being in an unknown room as she goes in and out of consciousness with dreams of her past. The only actual thing that we know is that Lilly is being held against her will and the only way to escape is to sign a contract saying that she willingly signs over her rights to J.S. for the next five years; however, that will give her financial freedom, so Lilly often wonders if she should just sign it. The characters so far are engaged in a battle of wills and I am looking forward to seeing who bends first and where the story will lead us next.
I will keep an eye out for the next volume as I’m sure that’s where the real story begins. It has a cliffhanger that will keep the reader wanting more, without the reader even realizing that the author has stopped the book, as the reader just keeps wondering what will happen next.
Uncovering You is a dark, psychological, erotic thriller. Lilly wakes in the dark with a collar around her neck. She’s in a spacious room all alone. There’s a contract she’s asked to sign. If she signs it, she will be allowed certain *freedoms*. If she doesn’t…the implications are clear. She’ll suffer.
What does Lilly do? The contract asks her to give her life away to the mysterious J.S. for a term of 5 years to pay off her massive student loans. Loans she’ll never be able to repay otherwise after losing her job. What would you do?
In Uncovering You, we’re exposed to all of Lilly’s emotions and thoughts as she tries to cope with her new-found situation.
This genre…psychological erotic thrillers are usually formulaic. Man meets girl. Man wants to possess girl. Girl goes through struggle to submit to man. What’s different (and good) about Uncovering You is that in this installment of this multi-part story, we have almost no contact with the mysterious J.S. other than his contract. We spend the entire book in Lilly’s head. There’s also no sex. The entire book is the lead up to what might happen in the next installment.
My only criticism of this book is that it starts out bouncing around in time. It took me a bit to get oriented and understand why the author was taking us back and forth in Lilly’s timeline. It works once you’ve learned enough about Lilly to really care. Do not give up on the book after the first 10% if you feel a bit unmoored. You’ll soon understand the rationale for the time jumps.
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the next installment. What will Lilly do? What will the mysterious J.S. want from her?
