Vanessa has always dreamed of opening a pet rescue center. After inheriting money, she is soon to realize her life long dream. With the help of her real estate agent she locates the best property for her center, and with the help of Jason and her friends, The Pet Palace becomes the talk of the town. If you love animals, and a little romance to boot, you’ll love The Pet Palace. Set in the beautiful wine country of Northern California, you’ll be dreaming of the Pet Palace, and of time when you can visit beautiful Sonoma County, California.
I am an avid animal lover (having six dogs, two cats and six koi fish) so this book jumped right out at me as soon as I saw it. I loved the idea of a pet rescue and the fact that the author put so much thought into it. The authors love of all animals and her desire to help them is obvious throughout the entire book. It was a very detailed thought process that charted things from the beginning to end in order to open and run a rescue and the authors details on the way the characters interacted with and treated the animals in their lives was so heartwarming, however, there was just not enough depth into the characters and the secondary romances needed these additional details. It seemed like there were not enough details to really get to know the individual characters (other than Vanessa and Jason) and some of the other characters almost seemed like an afterthought.
I was slightly confused by the 4th wedding in the book because I only read about those characters in passing and then they have a whole chapter dedicated to their wedding. I feel as if the author should have transferred some of her details and effort into making all of the characters stand out if they were to have such an important role in her story. I felt as if the author had the potential to write a 4 or even 5 star story, but just lacked some of the details and depth in this one.
There were several grammatical errors and a few misspelled words, but the one thing that really jumped out were the times that the author switched from third to first person and back all within the same paragraph. This made it hard for the reader to just continue with the story, and disrupted the flow of the book. The writing should have stayed in the same tense throughout the book so that the reader could say that this was a light, quick read rather than a read that left them re-reading the same passages to make sense of them.
I look forward to trying another book by this author as she has great promise and great ideas, I just think that they can only get better from here. Again, this book had good potential and could have easily received a 4 or 5 star rating, so don’t dismiss the book, just read it with this in mind, as the idea and the details on the pet aspect of the story were there, it was the characters that will not stick out after you are finished.
