   Synopsis

Calvin Parish

They call me Hero.

I defend.

I protect.

I ask for nothing in return, and that makes me good.

Doesn’t it?

That which makes me the ultimate predator also feeds dark impulses I’ve learned to control—until I bring her too close. For years I’ve watched her from afar, but what started out as duty has become obsession.

Cataline Ford

I work hard.

I play by the rules.

I’m content.

My scars are quiet and invisible, and that keeps me hidden.

Doesn’t it?

One fateful walk home, I’m taken by someone I didn’t know I should fear. Captive and afraid, nobody will tell me why I’m confined to this hauntingly beautiful mansion. I’m given everything; I have nothing. He takes what he needs from me, and for that I hate him. But I might have loved him once.

And just because you’re reading this doesn’t mean I survive him.

***Contains Graphic Sex, Strong Language and Adult Situations. Not for young readers***

I want to start by saying that not everyone reads a book the same way. Each reader is different in how they see things and how they read, and that’s okay. If we all have the same opinions, we’d be bored. The novel Hero by Leighton Del Mia presents an interesting idea for a story; however, unfortunately it fell flat for me.

Let’s start with what did work for me: I enjoyed the premise of the story and the plot twists that were written in. I felt that the two different points of view, one from Cataline and the other from the male character of the book, really worked for me as a reader as it allowed me to follow their individual thought process. I won’t give away the surprises but some of them were very well done including plot twists that I never guessed would happen, and they really helped the story unfold.

So what didn’t work for me? Honestly, the main problem was that the characters just fell really flat for me. The female character Cataline didn’t grow at all through the book. She stayed the same. I liked that she started out pure and innocent, but despite undergoing various changes her personality doesn’t. I felt that she needed to grow to be stronger and more confident in what she wants. It was a struggle to keep reading at times because I felt like she should be doing more to help herself in the situations she was put in. She was told by other characters in the book that how to make things easier on herself, but instead she chose to make things worse. The author, in my opinion, hurt the character by not letting her grow especially as by the end of the book, Cataline is suddenly doing things that make no sense whatsoever and no explanation is given for this quick change of heart. It’s difficult and pretty unbelievable to have a person go from not doing something that they’re so adamantly against to suddenly doing that behavior for seems to be no reason at all.

The male character, Calvin is not your typical Alpha male. In fact, in my opinion, he’s too Alpha. It’s like the author is forcing the dominance onto the character and it’s unattractive. He also shifts from being super nice to being super mean and that’s confusing. Why is he being nice one minute and then cold as ice the next? I’m sure his secrets have something to do with it but it just feels too forced making it impossible to like him. There was no trust on his part to share his secrets with Cat and I believe that it would’ve worked better had the author let Calvin share why he’s the way he is. At the end, when he goes back to Cat, she’s got a life without him and she’s struggling to forget him. Its unclear why he shows up again and why she lets him get close to her.

Overall the end was just incredibly confusing as to me. I’m not sure if the author left me a cliffhanger or if she feels that she’s left me a pretty package with a bow. I certainly didn’t get any closure but don’t feel that it left me with a desire for the story to continue either. Do they live happily ever after? Or do they part ways again? I guess that is up to the reader to decide for themselves.
