Skye followed her high school boyfriend to Seattle for University, but once they arrived he dumped her shattering what he had already broken. The relationship and the aftermath left Skye broken and closed off from the world. She hasn’t made any friends and she doesn’t want anyway, she can’t stand to be touched and she hides behind her clothes and hair hoping nobody notices her. Until one day she collides with the TA all the other girls are staring at in her psychology class. He’s sees past everything and to pain that embodies Skye. Can they repair each other and move on from their pasts?
“I never thought colliding with somebody could change lives.”
I ended up loving this book. I was a little hesitant when I first started reading, before I knew Skye’s history. I did what everyone else in the book did actually, I was frustrated with how annoyingly shy and nervous she was. But as her character developed and you learnt more about her the character was no longer cliché and annoying, because in reality she had strength no one could see.
Sometimes stories like this develop unnaturally for me, characters changing too quickly and moving on and up in a way that doesn’t work well with how the story and character started, but that doesn’t happen here. Stephanie Witter has written characters that are so raw and wounded and she doesn’t force anything, every step for Skye whether it be forwards or backwards doesn’t feel like a scene filler or just put there to make the story go forward it actually feels right.
This books contains sensitive subjects and I think Stephanie Witter handled them amazingly, at no point did I feel anything was done to shock for the sake of shocking.
I would definitely recommend this book!

character, Skye, and find yourself looking at the world very differently. The
emotions I experience reading this novel was epic. One moment I would be so

Witter is a French dreamer. She started English at three and fell in love with
the language. Always with a book – or two – close by, she soon started reading
in English when she couldn’t wait to see Harry Potter translated in French.
After a while, reading wasn’t enough and she started writing young adult and
new adult contemporary novels always filled with drama. Now she hopes to
translate English novels in her mother tongue as her everyday job. By My Side
is her debut novel.
