Melanie here aka VampireLovingDork back with my review of Welcome To The Family by Caroline F Levy which I was given in exchange for an honest review.
Welcome to the Family tells the story of Angela (Angel) through her eyes as she moves from her life as a not very successful human into a word of vampires and were creatures she never dreamed existed.
As a debut novel you can definitely tell that the author is still finding her feet when it comes to getting the story across with some of it feeling a little rushed, as if she had so much to tell us and didn’t know quite how to pace it.
That being said the story itself is a good one. Although there are many themes and ideas that feel well known and have been used before this particular version seemed fresh and never left me feeling as though I had read it all previously (which when you have read as many of these as I have is always a good thing. Fringe sanctions within any set up like this are to be expected but there were definite storyline spins I didn’t see coming.
An adult rated book for sure due to the sexual nature of some of the scenes but nothing I think will offend any frequent reader of this genre.
Overall I would say it was a good first showing. I would definitely like to see where this story goes but my one piece of advice would be for the author to take a breath. Whilst nobody likes a book that drags on forever with no story sometimes it is better not to rush us through everything at break neck speed. Remember that while as a writer YOU know everything that is going on ….. sometimes us readers need a little hint so that we can see all that you dreamed we would.
